What causes damp and mould?

Damp and mould in a rented home is taken very seriously now. Under Awaab's Law, social landlords must investigate and fix serious hazards within strict timescales, and the government plans to extend similar rules to private rented homes through the Renters' Rights Act. Damp and mould is already one of the hazards councils assess under the Housing Health and Safety Rating System.

Frequently asked questions
Will bleach get rid of mould?
It may hide it for a while, but it usually comes back because the cause is still there. The moisture has to be dealt with first.
Is it rising damp?
Genuine rising damp is much rarer than people think. Most damp patches low on walls are caused by leaks, condensation or high outside ground levels. We'll tell you honestly what we find.
My tenant says there's mould. What should I do?
Respond quickly, arrange an inspection and keep a record of what you did. We can inspect, report and carry out the repairs, and liaise with your tenant for access.
Can you do the redecorating as well?
Yes. We can replaster and redecorate once the cause is fixed, so you only deal with one firm.
