Should I repair or replace my boiler?

Advice · Boilers

When your boiler breaks down, it’s hard to know whether to pay for a repair or invest in a new one. Here’s how we help customers across Leeds decide, honestly.

Usually worth repairing if…

  • The boiler is under about 10 years old
  • It has been reliable until now
  • The fault is a common part such as a pump, fan, diverter valve or sensor
  • Parts are still easy to get
  • It has been serviced regularly

Usually worth replacing if…

  • The boiler is 12 to 15 years old or more
  • You’ve had several breakdowns in the last year or two
  • Parts are obsolete or very expensive
  • It’s an old non-condensing or back boiler with poor efficiency
  • The repair quote is a large share of the cost of a new boiler
  • An engineer has classed it as unsafe

Think about running costs too

Older boilers can be much less efficient than a modern A-rated condensing boiler. If your boiler is old, a replacement can reduce your gas bills as well as the risk of breakdowns. A new boiler also comes with a manufacturer’s warranty, often for several years, as long as it is serviced every year.

What we do

When we come out to a boiler repair, we diagnose the fault and tell you the cost of the repair before doing it. If we think replacement makes more sense, we’ll explain why and give you a fixed quote for a new boiler. Then it’s up to you. We never pressure anyone into a new boiler.
